Category Monuments 0.00 BGN Duration (minutes): 30

Valchan voivode is a legendary figure in Bulgarian history. The most common hypothesis for his birthplace is the Strandzha region. He is believed to have been born between 1770 and 1780, and is known to have been a shepherd in his youth. Initially, he operated in the Strandzha Mountains, and after gathering a large detachment of 70 people, he began to operate throughout all of Bulgaria from Timok to Tulcea and from Macedonia to Constantinople. Valchan voivode died in Tulcea or Braila  somewhere around 1860. Today, the brave Bulgarian is best known for his treasure, accumulated by him and his detachment from many years of banditry. This treasure is the topic of thousands of myths and legends. It is said that after each robbery, most of what was stolen was carefully hidden in different caves.

A monument was unveiled in his honor in the village of Grozdyovo and later on in the village of Golitsa as well.
