Antique Fortress Shkorpilovtsi
Category Attractions 0.00 BGN Duration (minutes): 60The fortress is located 1.46 km east in a straight line from the centre of the village Shkorpilovtsi. It has a rectangular shape, with its long side facing in a north-south direction. It was built at the end of the 3rd century or the beginning of the 4th century. The approximate dimensions of the site are 100 metres in the north-south direction and 70 metres in the east-west direction. The exposed fortress wall is built of crushed stone, welded with white mortar, containing coarsely broken building ceramics. Its width is 2.5 metres. On the southern fortress wall there is a partially vaulted canal (cloaca maxima), used for draining the inner space of the fortress. Life in the fortress ceased at the end of the 6th century and the beginning of the 7th century after an intense fire.
