Category Monuments 0.00 BGN Duration (minutes): 10Shteryu voivode was born in the village of Byala around 1815-1818. There are several legends about this brave Bulgarian. According to one version, in 1837-1838 Shteryu voivode was active as a bandit in the Varna region with his comrade Kara Ivan. They robbed the rich Turks and killed those who tortured the civilian population. In 1860 their detachment punished Chorbadji Angel from the village of Ala Klise, today the village of Tsarkva, Balchik region. In the early summer of the same year, the group was defeated by the Turkish army. By way of a telegram from the governor of Tuna dated July 20, 1860, we learn about the death of voivode Shteryu.
In 1982, a memorial to bandit Shteryu was unveiled in the centre of Byala.
