Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Category Churches 0.00 BGN Duration (minutes): 30The church dates back to 1876. Legend has it that on the Christian holiday the Dormition of the Mother of God, when the church was to be consecrated, the Turks sent an army by sea. The soldiers had to destroy the temple and prevent its consecration. Unexpectedly, a strong snowstorm blew in, which was perceived as a sign in favour of the Christians and the Turks did not dare go ashore.
The church was operational until the mid-1980s, after which it was destroyed by the natural elements and the lack of maintenance from authorities and society. A foundation was established for its restoration, and in the summer of 2003 it managed to raise funds to begin construction on the new church. The idea was, after its demolition, to rebuild it with the bricks and stone blocks of the old church.
