Church of St. Paraskeva

Category Churches 0.00 BGN Duration (minutes): 30

The oldest existing church in Byala is named after the "Holy Venerable Martyr Paraskeva". It was built in 1847 according to the Ottoman Empire laws. The churches of Orthodox Christians could not be taller than a Turk with a fez mounted on his horse. The interior decoration was modest and yet Christian believers furnished and cared for it with great love. This is evidenced by the writings of the priests Michal, Dimitar and Mihail-Lazar Madjarov. Greek was preached in the church until 1907, during which time all church books in this language were confiscated and burned. In one of the rooms, in the vestibule of the church, a Greek school was held. The donated icons date back to 1830, some of which were restored by Nikola Zograf in 1935.
